Celebrating Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel M.P. Edeh at 79 and 50 Years of Priestly Ministry
Today, the Catholic Church, the academic community, and countless beneficiaries of his ministry join together in joyful thanksgiving as we celebrate Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Matthew Paul Edeh, CSSp, OFR, on the occasion of his 79th birthday and Golden Jubilee of Priesthood.
Fifty years ago, Fr. Edeh answered God's call to serve in the priesthood. Since his ordination in 1976, he has remained a shining example of faith, sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His life demonstrates that priesthood is not merely a vocation but a lifelong mission of service to God and humanity.
What makes Fr. Edeh's priestly journey particularly extraordinary is the immense impact he has made beyond the altar. Through a unique blend of spirituality, education, charity, healthcare, and human development, he has transformed countless lives across Nigeria and beyond. His ministry has become a living testimony that faith can be translated into practical action that uplifts humanity.
Over the decades, Fr. Edeh has established institutions that continue to shape generations and provide opportunities for thousands of people. He is the founder of Madonna University, Nigeria's first private Catholic university and one of the country's most respected higher institutions of learning.
He also founded Caritas University, created to provide quality education rooted in moral values and academic excellence.
His contributions to education extend further through the establishment of OSISATECH Polytechnic, OSISATECH College of Education (Our Saviour Institute of Science, Agriculture and Technology), as well as numerous primary and secondary schools dedicated to educational excellence and the empowerment of young people, including persons living with disabilities.
Beyond education, Fr. Edeh founded the renowned Pilgrimage Centre of Eucharistic Adoration and Peace in Elele, Rivers State, which has become one of the most important spiritual destinations in Africa, attracting pilgrims seeking healing, reconciliation, and deeper encounters with God.
His passion for charity and human dignity also inspired the establishment of numerous healthcare and humanitarian institutions, including Madonna University Teaching Hospital, rehabilitation centers, homes for motherless babies, and healthcare facilities dedicated to serving the poor and vulnerable. Through these initiatives, thousands have received medical care, shelter, hope, and renewed dignity.
Fr. Edeh's legacy extends to religious life as well. He founded the Sisters of Jesus the Saviour, the Fathers of Jesus the Saviour, and contemplative religious communities dedicated to prayer, evangelization, and service to humanity.
Widely recognized as one of the most influential and accomplished Catholic priests in Nigeria, Fr. Edeh has demonstrated that material resources, when guided by faith and charity, can become powerful instruments for transforming lives. His success has never been an end in itself but a means of advancing education, healthcare, evangelization, peace-building, and human development.
As a philosopher, educator, theologian, humanitarian, and priest, he has left an indelible mark on society. His contributions have earned him numerous national and international recognitions, including the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) for his outstanding service to Nigeria and humanity.
Today, as we celebrate his 79 years of life and 50 years of faithful priesthood, we thank Almighty God for this extraordinary servant whose vision, leadership, and generosity have impacted millions. His life reminds us that true greatness is measured not by personal achievements but by the number of lives touched and transformed.
We pray that the Lord will continue to bless Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel M.P. Edeh with good health, divine protection, renewed strength, greater wisdom, and abundant grace. May the works of his hands continue to flourish, and may his legacy of faith, charity, education, and service inspire future generations.
